Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area but having been active for years in Brooklyn’s vibrant underground scene, Renny Conti blends West Coast influences with the bittersweet poetry of the “flyover states”. The laid-back, summery retro vibe of Californian folk singers goes hand in hand here with the existentialist songwriting of an Elliott Smith or a Conor Oberst. On Conti’s debut album, “People Floating” (2018), this fusion tended to be minimalist, raw, and unpolished, taking on an almost autobiographical, diary-like quality. With his second album, “Renny Conti” (2025), the artist – true to the title – has found his true voice, infusing his music with alt-country and polyphonic choruses, dusty cascades of riffs and various production tricks. It’s no surprise, then, that the record has been hailed by Americana connoisseurs as an impressive statement from a completely independent songwriter who captures the contemporary spirit of US society like no other.
