About

When art sets out to depict collective resignation and overwhelming stress, it all too often ends up resorting to slogans of perseverance and – in the end – even manages to endorse the status quo. Deliberate provocation and uncompromising emotionality help Nachtkinder sidestep these pitfalls and instead combine incisive indie rock in a Sturm und Drang style with culturally critical lyrics. A certain self-assured, biting despair is therefore inherent in every note of songs such as “Sinn und Verstand” (2021) and “Ich glaube an Nichts” (2023). However, the Nachtkinder’s melodic hooks can also inspire, and the lines spat out by lyricist Noah Friebel offer encouragement, even when all exit strategies fail. It is a biographical mirror of the present, a radical introspection conjured up by this project and set against socio-economic reality. Following three EPs that were as painful as they were beautiful, this year sees the release of “Die Leiden der jungen N.” (2026), the long-awaited debut album by these hopeless romantics in which they challenge the suffering of our times in order to draw collective hope from it. Passion at any price, then – perhaps a risk that Nachtkinder are quite rightly taking.
