The sea is dark and vast – and somehow, beautiful, too. Perhaps that is why MDW do not ride the latest Neue Deutsche Welle towards the beach and instead dive right through it, swimming farther out to where the fleeing storms sing. The Hamburg-based duo provide the soundtrack to sad dancing, to that bittersweet melancholy which – in times of seemingly all-encompassing cultural bankruptcy – can also take on a comforting quality. Songs such as “Atme” (2024) and “oxy2cin” (2025) thus combine the sombre vibe of the post-punk heyday circa 1985 with new wave and meticulously crafted synth-pop to create atmospheres that oscillate between introspection and an extroverted party mood. It’s a delicate experiment that cannot be realised with fragments from off-the-shelf songwriting kits. A flair for good lyrics set to even better melodies is essential here – along with a touch of contemporary pop appeal and that certain rawness in sound and production. MDW deliver the full package with selected extras and don’t even ask for much in return: Just listen, let yourself go, and at the end of September, hop aboard their Reeperbahn premiere – a gig turned time machine – here with us.
