The opening film of the Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) 2026 is the epic documentary The Last First: Winter K2, directed by award-winning American filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev. The film tells the story of Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father and son Muhammad Ali Sadpara and Sajid Sadpara, and their historic and fateful 2021 attempt to become the first climbers to summit K2 in winter.
Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex, gripping and powerful story that sheds light on the world of high-altitude mountaineering in the most extreme conditions, as well as the culture that is undergoing change within it. The film follows the 2021 expedition, when Icelandic mountaineer John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father and son Ali and Sajid Sadpara set out with the goal of becoming the first people to summit K2 in winter.
