A gay rapper who’s shaking up the German rap scene from the ground up? What was unimaginable just a few years ago has – with Baran Kok – suddenly taken centre stage in the scene, sparking both enthusiasm and controversy in equal measure. The queer artist from Freiburg is turning the tables with sarcastic lyrics and a mix of hardcore rap, electro, and house, relishing the chance to poke fun at the cliché-loving consumers of the German hip-hop scene – and he’s deliberately counting on triggering a few bruised egos. And yet – or perhaps precisely because of this – tracks of the calibre of “Herr Officer” (2024) and “AMG Kanake” (2025) catapulted Baran last year onto every playlist that had even the slightest interest in non-conformist, contemporary German rap. This unconventional wordsmith with Kurdish roots skilfully turns homophobia and machismo on their heads, staking a claim to both his identity and his place in society with crassly exaggerated lines. On his debut EP, “Fag Life” (2026), sex-positive lyrics and the harsh realities of the streets collide relentlessly, ultimately bringing to light something new that simply hasn’t existed in this form in this country before: powerful rap that addresses the artist’s own gay identity with pride and self-assurance. So, it’s perfect timing that he’ll be presenting this sound on our stage this September.
