About
Fed up with stereotypes, division, hatred, and hate speech? Ebru Düzgün – aka Ebow – has had to put up with more than her fair share of it in her life and – unsurprisingly – has had absolutely enough. She lets off steam in tracks such as “Vogel & Meer” (2017) and “Butterflies” (2019) with lyrics that are as biting as they are clever, tackling everyday racism as well as offering strategies for a better life. The fact that the German-Turkish rapper and actress strikes a raw nerve is part of the concept. But so is her success. Albums of the calibre of “K4L” (2019) and “FC Chaya” (2024) reflect the current state of our society and also reveal ugly faces that would otherwise disappear behind media masks. Gender roles in Turkish communities, false patriotism, German arms exports, rampant war rhetoric: When Ebow goes on the offensive, it’s a barrage of beats and lyrics. She has been showered with awards for this for years now, and quite rightly so. Moreover, having already won the Keychange Award here in 2023, she is finally returning to Hamburg this year with brand-new track material.
